Chocolate Cookies & Fall Reading <3

Hello VIPs. Today, I thought I’d share a bit more about myself with all of you. At one time in my life, I was an avid baker and entered as many competitions as I could. All those years have garnered a lot of book fodder for future projects and on more than one occasion, also pushed me outside my comfort zone. I didn’t win every competition but I came back each year ready to try again. Isn’t that the point of life? Keep going and make it happen. That’s what I did. I find immense joy in baking and I firmly believe writing is a lot like baking. You need the perfect recipe for everything to come together. Without it, you’ve got one big mess on your hands and a lot of dirty dishes. Here are just a handful of ribbons I’ve won over the years. Many are still packed away and sadly, a few were ruined when one of our basements flooded a few years ago. But, I’ll always have the memories, right?

Speaking of books… Surprise! We released a book today! This is my last release of 2017. The Perfect Gift, A Christmas Anthology. Susan Fisher-Davis, Robin Deeter, Sherri Good, Cynthia Knoble, Screaming Mimi, Jacqueline Anne and I have brought you seven Christmas stories sure to warm up your chilly evening. A little naughty, a little nice…Perfect. Be sure to grab your copy and if you have time, we’d love for you to leave us a review.

New York Times bestselling author Brenda Novak returns to Silver Springs with a moving story about rebuilding your life when you’ve got nothing left to lose

Savanna Gray needs a do-over. Her “perfect” life unraveled when, to her absolute shock, her husband was arrested for attacking three women. With her divorce settled, she takes her two children home to Silver Springs to seek refuge between the walls of the farmhouse where she was born. It needs a little TLC, but she’s eager to take control of something.

Gavin Turner understands the struggle of starting over. Abandoned at a gas station when he was five, it wasn’t until he landed at New Horizons Boys Ranch as a teen that he finally found some peace. He steps up when Savanna needs help fixing things—even when those things go beyond the farmhouse.

Despite an escalating attraction to Gavin, Savanna resolves to keep her distance. She trusted her ex, who had a similarly tragic background, and is unwilling to repeat her past mistakes. But it’s hard to resist a man whose heart is as capable as his hands.

You can grab your copy anywhere books are sold. I’m so in love with the Silver Springs Series by Brenda Novak. (I haven’t found a book of hers yet that I couldn’t put down.) However, this series is…special. After reading each book, I feel as if I know these characters. Brenda has created another wonderful place to escape to.

What I’m baking…

 German Chocolate Cake Cookies.

Buckle up. This recipe is a bit long…But soooo worth it when you bite into these warm, gooey chocolate goodies.

**Do NOT preheat your oven. Mix your cookie dough first.**

Cookie Dough:

1 C. Butter (2 sticks)

1 C. Milk Chocolate Chips

2 C. Sugar

2 Eggs

½ teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon baking soda

¼ teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons vanilla

3 C. Flour

Frosting:

½ C. Firmly Packed Brown Sugar

¾ C Tightly Packed Coconut

½ C. Chopped Pecans

¼ C. Chilled Butter (1/2 stick)

**In a glass bowl, melt butter and chocolate chips in microwave on HIGH for 2 minutes. Stir until smooth.**

In another mixing bowl, mix the sugar and the eggs. Add the baking powder, baking soda, salt and vanilla. When the chocolate and butter mixture is no longer hot to the touch, add it to the sugar mixture and mix thoroughly. Add the flour and mix well. Dough will be stiff and a bit crumbly. (Cover dough and set aside).

**Frosting: Combine the brown sugar and coconut in a food processor. Mix until the coconut is in small pieces. Add the pecans. Cut the butter into four chunks and add to the mix. Process until the butter is mixed and in small bits.

Chill the frosting while you preheat your over to 350 F.

Roll bits of cookie dough into 1-inch balls. Place cookie dough balls on a greased or silicone cookie sheet. Using your thumb or small spoon, press the center of the ball, making deep indents in each dough ball. Roll frosting into ½ inch balls and place into the cookie dough indents.

Bake at 350 F for 10-12 minutes. Let the cookies cool on the cookie sheet for at least two minutes before moving them to a cookie rack or other surface. Makes 5-6 dozen cookies.

So, there you have it. That’s what I’m reading and baking this week. Hope you enjoyed today’s post. Let me know you were here by leaving me a comment below.

XOXO,

Madison

Like A Box of Chocolates… What Truly Matters?

Hello, VIPs. I hope you had a wonderful Halloween. By now, you’re cuddling up in front of a cozy fire or in your favorite blanket with an awesome book. Perhaps you’re scrolling through Facebook and stumbled upon this blog post of mine. Well, that’s why I’m here today—That and chocolate. There must always be chocolate.

Here’s the thing…I’ve spent over a decade (That’s right. Over ten years.) on Facebook between two Madison profiles. (One was shut down.) In all that time spent on everyone’s most-love-to-hate social media site, one thing is obvious. It’s all about the ‘likes’ and ‘reactions’. One post about someone’s book may get five, while another’s post about their dog gets a thousand. After a while, we all begin chasing those ‘likes’ as if we are all caffeine addicts after that first cup of coffee or tea that gives us our super-human people-ing abilities in the morning. When we share another post that comes close, we’re jubilant. When our post tanks, our days are defined by the less-than-stellar reaction to it. We even debate deleting the post out of embarrassment of it not being “liked enough to be relevant”. Some, make up outlandish tales akin to those they write or have read or watched on TV in order to get that ‘high’…that validation of how awesome, fabulous and caring of a person or how kick-butt they truly are. (Go you! If that’s how you roll.)

I didn’t start this career almost a decade ago to be Facebook’s Queen Bee… I began so I could share my love of books and my books with others.

I’ve thought about this for a very…VERY long time. When we’re gone (because eventually, we’ll all be “gone”), will we be unable to rest in peace if our tombstones don’t say…

“Here lies _______.

She (or he) left this world with over five-hundred thousand Facebook likes on her (or his) author page and over a million reactions on her (or his)personal posts. Her (or his) posts will truly be missed.”

I doubt it. In the end, those likes and reactions may be a great mood booster… temporary, social media serotonin. But, that’s it. Temporary. For me, personally, I’m just happy if something I share from my day gives someone a laugh, makes them smile or helps them through their day. I’m not in it for the attention. Maybe that’s where I’ve failed…miserably (in the eyes of Facebook kings and queens). That’s okay by me. I’ll focus on writing books I love and hopefully others will love…someday.

I see social media as I see this box of chocolates. What truly matters? Is it what’s on the outside or what’s at the heart of everything?

For myself, Facebook and chocolates are necessary. But best in small doses.

Once a year, I allow myself this treat. To me, it’s too expensive and I stretch these eight Midnight Swirls for well over a month. Sometimes…months. I have a nibble and enjoy the smooth, dark chocolatey goodness as I forget my own worries and troubles for a moment or two. The next day, I may or not do the same thing. The same goes for Facebook. I log on and scroll through the posts in search of the funny, good and heartwarming real-life stories from friends. In those moments, I embrace them as I do my small (microscopic) indulgence of chocolate. Other times, not so much. Those days feel as if I took the biggest bite of imitation chocolate and I’ll never be rid of the taste.

Months ago, I stopped living for ‘likes’. The amount of those ‘likes’ or having four-thousand-ninety-nine Facebook friends (And OMG! Who will be lucky #5000?) don’t define me or make me who I am as an author, wife, mother or human being. Sure, we all love it when people we know and respect show interest in what we say and do. Or when they’re happy for our achievements, share our new releases, cover reveals, show compassion when we’re down, love our beautiful or laugh at our silly posts. We’re human. My question is… Where does it all lead? Where does it all end? Have we gone so far down the rabbit hole of Facebook that we no longer recognize fact from fiction? Or are we nothing more than mentally exhausted human beings who no longer care for reality in any shape or form and are now so blissfully unaware and willing to believe the outlandish without question?

Personally, I prefer my fiction in books and that’s where I’d love for it to stay. Pertaining to books… I’ll have one more release this year. An anthology with six amazing authors. After that, there won’t be another from me until Spring 2018. And I have no idea when my next book after that will be published. I won’t push myself to crank out a two-to-four-week book. That’s not who I am or “how I roll“. I need more time. I’d apologize for that, but it’d be an insincere apology and I won’t waste your time or mine. I’m not quitting writing…FAR from it. But, I’m not staying on the same path. This path is a dead end road for me. And I’m not leaving social media, but I’m not setting up residence there either. There’s more to life and there’s more to say… in books. It’s time for me to get back to writing the stories in my heart and I haven’t been able to do that in a very long time due to my own inability to stop scrolling through Facebook. I’m in cut-back mode and I’ll be finding my bliss in fiction between the paper pages again instead of in “Like Land”.

Hopefully, I’ll still see all of your smiling faces here or online somewhere. This post isn’t about bashing anyone for the way they “social media”. It’s simply something that’s been on my mind for a while and I thought I’d share. Perhaps, you’ll see it as “chocolate for thought”.

I’m off to grab tonight’s bite of chocolate. Hope you have a great evening and do whatever makes you happy. #BeYourself

XOXO, Madison

#ComingSoon: Megan Slayer ROCKS Another Rosie Peaks Book!

Wendi Zwaduk/Megan Slayer and I have worked up another surprise for you. Here’s Megan’s latest installment in the Rosie Peaks Crossover series:

Mix one vampire with one human who doesn’t believe in the paranormal and add some sizzle.
Anson wasn’t looking for a partner when he spotted the handsome human, but he’s not about to argue when the mood strikes. He’s got to bring a date to the Halloween bash and Parker fits his bill exactly. Now all he needs to do is convince Parker that vampires truly exist.
Parker is practical, intelligent and a little on the geeky side. He can’t believe his eyes—a handsome man has not only hit on him, but asked him out…to a masquerade ball. He doesn’t believe in vampires, but Anson wears his Dracula costume a bit too well.
Can these two find love and trust after all or will the sparks only last until the dawn?

#NewRelease & A #Giveaway from Sharon Struth

Happy Release Day, Sharon Struth!

It’s my honor and pleasure to share this wonderful new book with all of you. The Sweet Life is here…Check out this amazingly beautiful cover, the blurb and excerpt. Then, hop on over to enter the giveaway.

In Italy, the best attractions are always off the beaten path . . .

Mamie Weber doesn’t know why she survived that terrible car accident five years ago. Physically, she has only a slight reminder—but emotionally, the pain is still fresh. Deep down she knows her husband would have wanted her to embrace life again. Now she has an opportunity to do just that, spending two weeks in Tuscany reviewing a tour company for her employer’s popular travel guide series. The warmth of the sun, the centuries-old art, a villa on the Umbrian border—it could be just the adventure she needs.

But with adventure comes the unexpected . . . like discovering that her entire tour group is made up of aging ex-hippies reminiscing about their Woodstock days. Or finding herself drawn to the guide, Julian, who is secretly haunted by a tragedy of his own, and seems to disapprove any time she tries something remotely risky—like an impromptu scooter ride with a local man.

As they explore the hilltop towns of Tuscany, Mamie knows that when this blissful excursion is over, she’ll have to return to reality. But when you let yourself wander, life can take some interesting detours . . .

Acclaim for The Sweet Life

Struth’s novel is a great debut for a potential series…The story overall is intriguing, and of course, a setting in Italy is always something that makes for a great book. It comes with a strong recommendation and is worth picking up for a nice treat.” RT Reviews

The sights, the sounds, the smells and the food. Oh, the food! I had to make spaghetti and meatballs the day I started the book. Sharon Struth puts you right in Tuscany in a way that not only transports you to the crowded streets and vineyards, but surrounds you with them. Masterfully done.” Goodreads 5-star Review

You will like this if you’d like a nice tour of Tuscany (food, wine, just delightful), a little romance, and a happy ending. Perfect relaxation...” Goodreads 5-Star Review

Excerpt:

In the driver’s seat sat a square-faced man with a full Romanesque nose and short, dark hair. He greeted her with a wide smile. “Ciao, bella.”

She climbed the steps and smiled back. “Hello. I mean, Ciao. Sorry I’m late.”

Before the nice man in the driver’s seat could respond, a man standing about halfway down the aisle said, “I’m sorry, miss. You’ve got the wrong bus.”

Whoever he was, his cargo shorts and faded Led Zeppelin T-shirt didn’t carry any authority. But he held a clipboard, and his tone suggested he meant business. His Gaelic-looking face carried a slight boyish quality, hardened into a manly appearance due to his trimly cut mustache and beard. Wavy hair the color of cognac peeked out from beneath a gold cap with orange and blue lettering reading Wanderlust Excursions.

“I’m sure the hotel front desk can help you find the right tour.” He gave her a now-hurry-along smile and turned back to the man he’d been talking to.

“Did I just talk to you on the phone?”

He lifted his chin and raised a brow. “We’re waiting for Felix.” His gaze traveled her from top to bottom then he looked her in the eyes. “I’m pretty sure you’re not Felix?”

“No, but…” Mamie became aware of the silence and scanned the passengers.

Everyone in the full bus stared back. Quiet. Curious. She squirmed and her gaze drifted back to the man who seemed to be in charge.

“No. I’m not Felix, but if this is Wanderlust Excursions, it’s where I’m supposed to be.”

He squinted. “Wait. Are you the woman who answered Felix’s phone?”

“Yes. I’m taking his place on the tour.”

He snorted. A short, patronizing laugh. “I don’t think so.”

“Why not?”

“Because you’re clearly not Felix.”

“But he transferred his vouchers to me.”

“Nobody told me. Our company rules state that purchased seats are not transferrable without prior home office approval.” He frowned and studied her again. “Besides, this is a specialized tour and you’re not a member of this group. Felix is.”

“How do you know I’m not?”

His lip curled into a little smirk. “Did you attend Woodstock?”

“The concert?”

“Is there another one?”

“Well, no, but…” Mamie scanned the other passengers more carefully. Other than the guide—everyone else was probably over fifty-five. Maybe even over sixty. “What group are they part of?”

“They are”—the guide, whose company sponsored tag read Julian, glanced at his clipboard—“the Woodstock Wanderers.”

“Felix may not have been part of it either.” Mamie never heard him mention them before.

“Are you kidding? Felix was one of our founder members.” A man with thinning white hair, dark-rimmed glasses, and a full white beard sitting in the front seat winked at Mamie. “Bernie” in capital letters sat square in the center of a nametag with a tie-dyed background. Beneath his name it said, “Favorite Woodstock Song: ‘Let’s Go Get Stoned,’ Joe Cocker.”

Mamie would’ve never put Bernie together with that song, but… The bus’s silence and everyone watching her jarred her back to the problem at hand. “Felix never mentioned your group to me.”

Guess she knew Felix but didn’t know him. The truth about how she and Felix knew each other, though, wasn’t something she could share.

So she did the only thing she could do. Staring Julian square in the eye, she said, “Uncle Felix wanted me to take this trip. I’m his niece. He insisted I go in his place.”

“His niece, huh?” The tour director rubbed the back of his neck and considered her again. He shook his head. “I’m sorry he’s decided not to come, but on the transfer, I can’t budge. Rules are rules.”

A thin gentleman sitting a couple rows behind Bernie, with salt-and-pepper patches of hair above his ears, piped in. “Julian. Dude. Can’t you just go with the flow? She looks harmless. Let her come.”

Mamie squinted. His tag read Bob, but before she could read more, the others joined in with choruses of “yeahs,” and she looked away.

“You know what they say, Julian.” A woman with curly brown hair, peace sign earnings, and a pretty smile said, “Don’t sweat the small stuff.”

Mamie noted her nametag read Martha and her favorite Woodstock song was “Suite Judy Blue Eyes” by Crosby, Still, and Nash.

Julian pursed his lips. “All due respect Martha, me losing my job isn’t exactly small stuff.”

Martha grinned slyly and winked. “We promise to keep it a secret from the boss.” She glanced around. “Right everybody?”

Another chorus of loud “yeahs” filled the bus.

One slim man with thinning hair who sat in the last row fist bumped the air. “We aren’t afraid of the man.”

The passengers murmured and nodded, complete agreement on that one. Mamie loved this solidarity. Though she’d never considered herself a hippie—more like a loner—she had an incredible urge to be part of this group.

Julian watched them, frowning. He refocused his attention on Mamie. “Sorry. I’m going to have to ask you to step out so we can start. We’re already running late.”

Normally, Mamie respected timeliness, schedules, and rules. But she had a job to do. A mission to accomplish.

“Please. My uncle, he really wanted me to go and—”

Julian took several swift steps to the front of the bus and stopped close to her. He dropped his voice. “Listen, this isn’t personal. The last thing I need is to lose this job. Do me a solid and go see if you can get any of your money back.”

She quietly replied, “You don’t understand. I need to go on this tour.”

He narrowed his hard green eyes, but before he could say a thing, a chant filled the air.

“Let her stay. Let her stay. Let her stay.”

A blond-haired woman with a cherub face who sat at Bernie’s side spoke up over the chant. “Doesn’t she remind you of Tracy, Bern?” Her nametag read Sandra and her favorite Woodstock song was “Amazing Grace” by Arlo Guthrie. She patted Julian’s arm in a very maternal way. “Tracy’s our daughter. We’d love having some young energy around. Tracy’s just too busy working to spend any time with us.”

Julian’s lower lip dropped. He drew in a deep breath, looked at Mamie, and motioned to the door. “Let’s talk outside.”

She turned and headed off the bus. Little did he know, she wasn’t about to back down. Nothing would stop her from getting on this bus or making the most of this adventure. Two very good reasons existed for fighting the good fight.

The memory of her husband and daughter.

While Hank is higher up in the mountains with Mitch, the unthinkable happens– A fierce storm with gusty winds reignites the smoldering embers at the Chimney Tops. Kallie is stuck at home alone with no way to escape the fires roaring across the Smokies. Will he and Mitch get away from the Chimney Tops in time? Will Hank make it home to save his wife and unborn child from the fires roaring through their mountain home? It’ll take more than a miracle to save them this time.

#ValentinesDay Hop & A Giveaway w/ @MadisonSevier

Welcome to the Valentine’s Day Hop featuring awesome reads and a great grand prize from some of your favorite authors.

Keeping with theme of ‘all things love’, one of my favorite times to read romance is during the month of February. I know there are many people who are by themselves on Valentine’s Day and before I met my husband, I spent many alone myself. So, what did I do to ignore all of the lovey-dovey when I wasn’t feeling it? You guessed it…I escaped into books. Of course, I bought myself some chocolate and had a really great mug of coffee to keep by my side.

Now, I think about how to make sure we celebrate love everyday. That’s the key, I think. Love matters all year long.  Some of the best gifts I’ve ever received were just random things throughout the year. Rocks from the states my husband has been to are my all-time favorite things. I’ve marked them with which state they’re from and the year. How about you?

To enter my #giveaway, comment below with the best, worst or weirdest gift you’ve ever received or given. You’ll be in the running for a Starbucks GC for you or to give to someone else.
