Here we are on the eve of our release and I’ve been fortunate enough to get Selena Barnes to speak with me one more time. After three years of yelling, screaming and demanding my attention, she’s been very quiet lately and I can only assume her demons have left her alone…for now. I wanted to know how she was feeling about her story finally getting out and she was as she always has been…very straight-forward about everything. Here’s a snippet from that interview:
Hi Selena. Thank you for agreeing to speak with me again. I haven’t heard from you in awhile and I have to admit I’ve been a bit worried. How have you been?
Selena: Hi. I’ve been great actually. I’m very excited and a bit anxious. I’m sure you understand.
I certainly do. My stomach has been in knots. I hope you’re happy with the way the story turned out.
Selena: Of course I am. I never thought this day would get here. I’ve been pacing the floors for what feels like eternity. I’ve been driving my husband insane. (Laughter). I can’t thank you enough for being so patient with me. I know I can be quite the handful. I warned my husband when I met him. I said: “You have no idea what you’re in for with me.” He simply laughed it off and replied: “Don’t worry, Kitten. I have plenty of ways to keep you in line.” And you know what? He most certainly does. (wink, wink)
Speaking of your husband, how is he?
Selena: He’s fantastic! So strong and hot and…
I, um, I meant how is he feeling about the book coming out? He wasn’t around much during the writing process.
Selena: Ohhhh. He’s great. He’s also very excited. Of course, he’s been very busy lately, but he’s been a huge comfort to me. Reliving the things that have happened hasn’t been easy. Luckily, I have friends like you and a great family to get me through.
You’re very sweet. I’m glad I could help. So, can I assume your life has gone back to normal now?
Selena: Normal? (laughter) What is normal? If you mean boring, then, most certainly not. Life has been one big adventure. In fact, I have plenty of new things to tell you about. I figured you probably needed a break after the Hell I’ve put you through for three years, so we’ll talk about all of the new stuff soon.
Well, it has been an adventure so far, but I cannot wait to hear what you’ve been up to.
Selena: All in due time. Let’s wait until after the book comes out before I bombard you with more.
Sounds good. Can you tell me anything?
Selena: Off the record I will. For now, I’d like you to share our excerpt with the readers. I had such a difficult time helping you with the decision. It was much harder than I had anticipated it would be. But how can we tell people about the book without giving away every secret?
I think we did great. It shows some action without giving away too much.
“Enjoying yourself, Cupcake?”
“Ah!” I tried to jump up, but to no avail. He had me pinned and the floor was too slippery for me to gain any footing. In front of me, mere inches from my face, Shawn stood in all of his demonic glory.
His forked tongue slithered out of his snarling lips and licked up the side of my face. I felt bile rise in my throat as he trailed his claws down the side of my neck. “Let go of me, asshole!”
“Shh. Now, now, is that any way to speak to your fiancé?” He laughed. “We wouldn’t want to wake your familiar, now would we? I’d be forced to silence him.”
“Really? You’ve already killed him once. That leaves eight more lives, correct? Believe me, I would enjoy watching him die over and over again. How you can love something as ugly as that walking fur-ball is beyond my comprehension.”
“Have you ever looked in a mirror? You’re a nasty beast!”
“A beast you fell in love with, no less, and I’ve never heard you complain before.” He appraised me with yellow, beady eyes as he tilted his head side to side. “I’ve always loved your tight little body. I’ll enjoy tearing into you. Now that you no longer smell like mutt, I bet you’ll taste divine.”
Ugh. He flicked his tongue out, wiggling it in front of my face and I wanted to rip it out of his scaly face. Rage was pulsing through me and I didn’t know whether to embrace it and let it fill me with power or tamp it down to keep me from getting into more trouble. What was I supposed to do? No matter how I struggled, I couldn’t escape his claws. With every movement, they dug into me deeper, angering me more and more.
“Let go of me, dammit!”
He pulled me to my feet and pinned me against the wall with one hairy thigh between my legs. I looked down and saw his hooves also had talon-like claws and my mind spun with fear as nausea filled me. I had never seen a demon this hideous and I’d certainly never fought one that large on my own. What the hell was I going to do?
“How nice of you to get us the Honeymoon Suite” he hissed. “But isn’t it a bit too soon? The wedding isn’t for a few weeks. Do you think your dear ole daddy will show up? Maybe he’ll even walk you down the aisle and hand you over to me? Roberta will even stand in as your maid of honor. Wouldn’t that be divine?” The demonic asshole had the nerve to wiggle his eyebrows as he pondered that plan.
“Fuck you and your troll-whore! There isn’t going to be any wedding! And what about my father? You killed him before you could even get to know him, remember?” I’d be damned before I’d let him know how much I knew about Samell, or Samuel, as he was known to most people.
My breath was ragged and shallow as he shoved his chest against mine. If he pressed any harder, I’d become one with the marble wall. The pain was insane but I wouldn’t let him know that. I knew he’d enjoy every suffering moment as he crushed me, breaking one rib at a time and as they drove into my organs one by one, and he’d count each heartbeat until my last.
“That ring says something entirely different. You’re mine,” he growled. “And you will be until I no longer have a use for you. As for your father, you killed him. Remember?” He mimicked and goaded, pushing me closer to the edge of losing it.
“Really? Roberta says you killed him, Shawn.”
“You’re lying. She would never betray me like that. Besides, Roberta is still in Germany. You know nothing!”
He had no idea I knew Samell was my father or that I’d spoken to Roberta. Which meant he also had no idea I knew I was part demon. I tucked that bit of information away for now and took the opportunity to slam my forehead against his. It hurt like hell, but it stunned him long enough for me to escape his grasp.
Just as I reached one of the shower door handles, it exploded outward. I fell hard, and my face bounced on the glass coated marble floor. I rolled over as he stomped his way out of the shower. “Uh-oh. Cupcake has a boo-boo. Let me kiss it and make it better.” He grabbed me by the hair without even leaning down. His arms were elongated and scaly on one side and covered in hair underneath. What the fuck?
I really should have studied up on demons last night. I was smack dab in the middle of a deep shit situation and I had no idea how to get out of it. My powers, good or evil were my only chance. There was no time to make a moral decision. It was live or die and if I died at his hands, he’d steal my powers before I could even blink.
He perched atop the marble steps of the tub and stood over me. “What do you want, Shawn? Why are you here wasting my time when you could be fucking your troll and making little ass-faced demon babies?”
He laughed a deep guttural cackle. “You know what I want. You’re mine. Did you think I would let you run off and shack up with Jacobs? You will never be with that mongrel and I will kill you myself if I have to, just to keep you away from him. I have a wonderful future planned for us, Selena. It’s about time you accepted that fact and started acting like a proper wife!”
Selena: Goddess! He is so sickening! Even now, thinking about him makes me want to vomit. Or bust shit. I’ve really come to enjoy getting my feelings about Shawn Richardson out of my system. Who knew bashing things could feel so great?
I take it you still hate him? And Roberta?
Selena: Hate is such a strong word. Oh. Who are we kidding? You know perfectly well how i feel about him and that ugly troll-bitch. They set out to take away everything that mattered to me. That’s not easily forgotten. Neither are their lies.
But…they weren’t the only people who lied to you, were they?
Selena: No. But…some people lie for deception and others lie to protect us. I’ve forgiven them all for lying. However, I’ll never forget. I’ll never feel as powerless as I did before. They can’t break me again.
Good. I’m so happy to hear you say that. You’ve come a long way, Selena.
Selena: With your help.
Well, I’m sure you’ve got some celebrating to do. So, I’ll let you go. I do hope we can get together sometime soon.
Selena: Yes, we’re headed into town. There’s a party in our honor! I wish you could be there. But I understand you have PR stuff to handle. But if you finish early, please stop by. And if I don’t see you tonight, you can count on us getting together for coffee soon. There’s a new business in town and I’m sure you’re going to love it.
Sounds great! I’ll stop by if I can. Call me soon. And Selena, thank you again. Give my love to the family.
Selena: Will do. Take care, Madison.
Well, I can’t blame Selena for wanting to celebrate. If I were twenty-five again, like she is, I’d be out partying, too. After all, this story, her story of betrayal and lies surrounded by wicked deeds happened to her. She has every right to enjoy the release of it. It weighed her down for so very long.
